Luke 7:11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain;
and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd.

being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large
crowd from the city was with her.
Luke 7:13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her,
Do not weep.
Luke 7:14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried
him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”

prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.”
Luke 7:17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding
region.
I. THE TOWN SETTING: ONE FUNERAL, TWO PROCESSIONS.
Luke 7:11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain;
and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd.
Pastor Lindell said “As the ladies prayed for Krissy Dines over the next 30 minutes,
all three toes grew, and by that point, were longer than her pinky toe. Within an
hour, nails began to grow on all the toes,”
Luke 7:12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was
being carried out,…”
Luke 7:12 ” … a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother;

Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants

grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.
Luke 7:12″… And a large crowd from the city was with her.
II. THE COMPASSIONATE SAVIOR: ONE MIRACLE, MANY WITNESSES.
Luke 7:13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her,
Do not weep.
Deuteronomy 4:31 For the LORD your God is a compassionate God;

Colossians 2:11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made
without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision
of Christ,
Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him
through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision
of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all
trespasses,
Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us,
which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Colossians 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew
of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
I. OUR POSITION IN CHRIST IS ONE OF COMPLETE SURGERY.
Colossians 2:11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made
without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision
of Christ,
Acts 15:1 And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren,
Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot
be saved.”
The Jewish Talmud says, “The commandment of circumcision is more important
than all the other injunctions of Scripture.”
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of
yourselves; it is the gift of God,
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Luke 2:21 And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child,
His name was called Jesus …”
Psalm 51:5 “… in sin my mother conceived me.”
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die,
Romans 4:9 Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or
upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham
for righteousness.
Romans 4:10 How then was it accounted? While he was circumcised, or
uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised.
Romans 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness
of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of
all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be
imputed to them also,
Romans 4:12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the
circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham
had while still uncircumcised.
Colossians 2:11 (Phillips) In Christ, you were circumcised, not by any physical act,
but by being set free from the sins of the flesh by virtue of Christ’s circumcision.
II. OUR POSITION IN CHRIST IS ONE OF COMPLETE IDENTITY.
Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him
through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision
of your flesh, …”
Colossians 2:13 “… He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you
all trespasses,
III. OUR POSITION IN CHRIST IS ONE OF COMPLETE IMMUNITY.
Colossians 2:13 … having forgiven you all trespasses;
Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us,
which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
IV. OUR POSITION IN CHRIST IS ONE OF COMPLETE VICTORY.
Colossians 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew
of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
1) SATAN HAS BEEN DISARMED.
Colossians 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers,
2) SATAN HAS BEEN DISGRACED.
Colossians 2:15 … he made a shew of them openly …
Robert Payne book called “The Roman Triumph.” (quote)
“For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed
the honor of a triumph. In the procession came trumpeters and musicians and
strange animals from the conquered territories, together with carts laden with
treasure and captured armaments. The conqueror rode in a triumphal chariot,
and the dazed prisoners walked in front of him. Sometimes his children, robed
in white, stood with him in the chariot, or rode the trace horses.”
3) SATAN HAS BEEN DEFEATED.
Colossians 2:15 … triumphing over them in it.
Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in
heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Notes:
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty
deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of
the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
Colossians 2:10 And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality
and power.
I. WHAT IS THE WARNING OF PHILOSOPHY?
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you …”
Matthew 7:15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing,
but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
Philippians 3:2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!
Colossians 2:8 (Amplified) See to it that no one carries you off as spoil or makes
you yourselves captive …”
Matthew 23:15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel
land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice
as much a son of hell as yourselves.
2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there
will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies,
even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
2 Peter 2:2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way
of truth will be blasphemed.
1 John 4:1 “… many false prophets have gone out into the world
II. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF PHILOSOPHY?
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy …
Can someone who believes life has no meaning lead a meaningful life?
III. WHEN IS PHILOSOPHY DECEIVING?
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty
deceit, …”
John 8:44 “He … does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the
father of it.”
Question: Why do people have to tell lies?
Answer: Usually it’s because they want something. They are afraid the truth
won’t get it for them.
Lyrics
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It’s a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
IV. WHERE DO PHILOSOPHIES COME FROM?
#1 – Tradition.
Colossians 2:8 “… according to the tradition of men, …”
Colossians 2:8 (NLT) ” … high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking
Philosophy is the best humans can come up with if they don’t believe in God.
Mark 2:7 “… Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
1 Peter 1:18 “… your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,
Deuteronomy 12:32 “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you
shall not add to it nor take away from it.”
It’s subtraction by addition.
We subtract God’s word and add in it’s place man’s word.
1 Corinthians 8:1 … Knowledge puffs up …
# 2 – Rudiments of the world.
Colossians 2:8 “… according to the basic principles of the world, and not according
to Christ.
A recent poll showed that 40% of Americans had a favorable view of socialism.
Charles Spurgeon writes:
You will philosophize men into hell, but never into heaven.
Colossians 2:8 “… and not according to Christ.
Surveys reveal that the main objection currently that people have to Christianity
is intolerance.
2 Peter 3:9 “… Not willing that any should perish but that all should come to
repentance.
V. WHAT IS THE ANSWER TO PHILOSOPHY?
Colossians 2:9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
Colossians 2:10 And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality
and power.
Lyrics “He’s All You Need” by Steve Camp
When you’re alone, your heart is torn, He is all you need.
When you’re confused, your soul is bruised, He is all you need.
He’s the rock of your soul, He’s the anchor that holds
Through your desperate time.
When your way is unsure His love will endure, a peace you will find
Through all your years, the joy, the tears, He is all you need.

Colossians 2:1 For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and
those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh,
Colossians 2:2 That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love,
and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge
of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ,
Colossians 2:3 In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Colossians 2:4 Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive
words.
Colossians 2:5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit,
rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
Colossians 2:6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk
in Him,
Colossians 2:7 Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you
have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
I. PASSION: I WANT YOU TO KNOW MY PASSION FOR YOU
Colossians 2:1 For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and
those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh,
Colossians 4:16 Now when this epistle is read among you, see that it is read
also in the church of the Laodiceans,…
Richard Foster, in his classic book on prayer, writes:
“If we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than it is in our power
to give them, and this will lead us to prayer. Praying for others is a way of loving
others.”
Colossians 2:2 That their hearts may be encouraged …
Hebrews 10:25 (NIV) Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit
of doing, but encouraging one another–and all the more as you see the Day
approaching.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV) Therefore encourage one another and build each
other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Truett Cathy, founder of Chik-Fil-A, once said, “No one ever died from too
much encouragement.”
Colossians 3:23 (ESV) Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not
for men.
Colossians 2:2 That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love,
Jordan Peterson (quote) “You actually don’t grow up until someone is more
important than you.”
John 13:35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for
one another.
II. PROSPERITY: I WANT YOU TO SEE HOW PROSPEROUS YOU ARE.
Colossians 2:2 … and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding,
to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ,
Colossians 2:3 In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
The life-changing mystery of God is summarized in these seven words:
Colossians 1:27″… Christ in you–the hope of glory.”
2 Corinthians 4:7, “We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing
power is from God and not from us.”
Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
III. PROTECTION: I WANT TO PROTECT YOU.
Colossians 2:4 Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive
words.
Acts 20:29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in
among you, not sparing the flock.
Acts 20:30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse
things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
Acts 20:31 Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease
to warn everyone night and day with tears.
IV. POTENTIAL: I WANT YOU TO REACH YOUR POTENTIAL.
Colossians 2:5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit,
rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
Colossians 2:6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk
in Him,
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children
of God, to those who believe in His name:
Jesus will live in His people, not merely live with His people.
Colossians 2:6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk
in Him,
Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights
in his way.
1 John 2:6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He
walked.
Galatians 2:20 “… It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me …”
Colossians 2:7 Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you
have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
1. CULTIVATION: BE ROOTED.
Colossians 2:7 Rooted … in Him ”
Isaiah 61:3 “.. That they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of
the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
Psalm 1:3 He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth
its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall
prosper.
2. CONSTRUCTION: BE BUILT UP.
Colossians 2:7 “… built up in Him …”
1 Corinthians 3:14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will
receive a reward.
Ephesians 2:20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone,
3. REGULATION: BE ESTABLISHED.
Colossians 2:7 ” … established in the faith,…”
Matthew 18:16 ” … by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be
established.
Acts 16:5 So the churches were established in the faith, and increased in number
daily.”
4. EDUCATION: BE TAUGHT.
Colossians 2:7 “… as you have been taught…”
Acts 20:20 How I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you,
and taught you publicly and from house to house,
Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able,
by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.
Matthew 5:33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time,
Matthew 5:34 But I say unto you,
Half of spiritual growth is learning what we don’t know.
The other half is unlearning what we do know.
5. RECOGNITION: BE ABOUNDING.
Colossians 2:7 “… abounding in it with thanksgiving.”
2 Corinthians 8:7 But as you abound in everything–in faith, in speech, in knowledge,
in all diligence, and in your love for us–see that you abound in this grace also.
2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you,…

Sermon Notes:
Colossians 1:24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh
what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the
church,
Colossians 1:25 Of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from
God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God,
Colossians 1:26 The mystery which has been hidden from ages and from
generations, but now has been revealed to His saints.
Colossians 1:27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of
the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope
of glory.
Colossians 1:28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in
all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 1:29 To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which
works in me mightily.
Investigator Josiah Thompson, said, “A president of the United States is shot
down at high noon in a public square with some 400 or 500 people looking on,
with maybe at least 38 of them taking film and photos, and now almost 60 years
later we don’t know what happened. As long as a mystery resides at the center
of this case ‘it can’t be closed.”
Proverbs 3:32, “His secret is with the righteous.”
Psalm 25:14, “The secret of the Lord is with them that hear Him.”
1 Corinthians 13:2 And though I …understand all mysteries …
A mystery is a hidden spiritual truth in the past now revealed by divine revelation.
I. THE HISTORY OF MYSTERY.
Deuteronomy 29:29 The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those
things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we
may do all the words of this law.
Proverbs 25:2 “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing.”
Now when the word “mystery” is used in the New Testament, it is also refering
to something that was never revealed in the Old Testament to anybody.
1. The Mystery of Godliness Revealed: God in human flesh.
1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.
2. The Mystery of the Church Revealed.
Ephesians 3:3 How that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as
I have briefly written already,
Ephesians 3:4 By which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge
in the mystery of Christ),
Ephesians 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men,
as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets:
Ephesians 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body,
and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel,
3. The Mystery of the Bride of Christ Revealed.
Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
Ephesians 5:31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and
be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
4. The Mystery of Israel’s Unbelief Revealed.
Romans 11:25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of
this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness
in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.
5. The Mystery of the Rapture Revealed.
1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but
we shall all be changed–
1 Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and
we shall be changed.
6. The Mystery of Iniquity Revealed.
2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who
now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
2 Thessalonians 2:8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord
will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of
His coming.
2 Thessalonians 2:9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working
of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
7. The Mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven Revealed.
Matthew 13:10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak
to them in parables?”
Matthew 13:11 He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you
to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.
Matthew 13:13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do
not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
Jesus taught to reveal, but also to conceal.
Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father,
Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise
and prudent and have revealed them to babes.
Matthew 11:26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.
II. THE MYSTERY OF HISTORY.
Colossians 1:26 The mystery which has been hidden from ages and from
generations, but now has been revealed to His saints.
What is the mystery that’s been hidden? “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Colossians 1:27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of
the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope
of glory.
Jesus died on the cross, so we can die to ourselves and He can live in us.
Stephen Olford said (quote):
“Spell out the word C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N. Then take the letter “A” from the end of
the word and put it at the beginning.
A Christian is ” A Christ In.”
Jesus became Immanuel, God with us, that He might forever be God in us.
Psalm 23:4 “… I will fear no evil; For you are with me;
Hebrews 13:5 ” … For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but
Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in
the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
1. Christ in you enables you to remain positive during suffering.
Colossians 1:24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh
what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the
church,
Romans 4:18 This salutation by my own hand—Paul. Remember my chains.
2. Christ in you is the way God fulfills all His precious promises.
Colossians 1:25 Of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from
God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God,
Major Ian Thomas in his book “The Saving Life of Christ” writes:
“To be in Christ– that makes you fit for heaven; but for Christ to be in you–that
makes you fit for earth! To be in Christ–that changes your destination; but for
Christ to be in you–that changes your destiny! To be in Christ makes heaven your
home; but for Christ to be in you makes this world God’s workshop.”
3. Christ in you is the only way you can become a complete person.
Colossians 1:28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in
all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
4. Christ in you is His mighty power working through you.
Colossians 1:29 To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which
works in me mightily.
Lyrics “Live This Mystery” by Michael Card
Since my life is hid in Thee,
I must live this mystery
In Him we live, in Him we move,
In Him all things are new
The mystery of life in Christ
Is Christ can live in you.
My God’s a big God but small enough to live in me.
2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; prove your
own selves. Know you not your own selves, how Jesus Christ is in you; except
you be reprobates?
