The Devil’s Is In The Details

The Devil’s Is In The Details

“The Devil Is In The Details” is part of the sermon series “Paying Ransoms and Making Deals.” This sermon focuses on the real spiritual battle between Jesus and the devil, emphasizing the temptations that Jesus faced in the wilderness (Luke 4). With powerful scriptural references, the message highlights the devil’s desire for worship and control over the kingdoms of the world, but it ultimately showcases Christ’s victory and the necessity of worshipping God alone.

Sermon Notes:

Luke 4:1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and
was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Luke 4:2 being tempted for forty days by the devil …
Luke 4:5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the
kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
Luke 4:6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory;
for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
Luke 4:7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written,
‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
Luke 4:13 Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from
Him until an opportune time.

DETAIL #1. THE DEVIL EXISTS AND IS A REAL ENEMY.

John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do.
Ephesians 2:2 “… walked according to the course of this world, according to the
prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

DETAIL #2. THE DEVIL’S WORLDLY OFFER TO JESUS.
Luke 4:5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the
kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
Luke 4:6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory;
for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

Matthew 12:25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom
divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against
itself will not stand.
Matthew 12:26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will
his kingdom stand?

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government
will be upon His shoulder.

Revelation 11:15 … “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of
our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”

Psalm 2:7 “I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
Psalm 2:8 Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance,

DETAIL #3. THE DEVIL’S MAIN DESIRE IS TO BE WORSHIPPED.
Luke 4:7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
Matthew 4:9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down
and worship me.”

Revelation 13:15 He was granted power to … cause as many as would not worship
the image of the beast to be killed.
Revelation 13:16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and
slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads,
Revelation 13:17 And that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark
or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

What is worship? It is giving glory to God.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all
to the glory of God.

Romans 1:25 ” … and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator

Whatever you offer your body to is your object of worship
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you
present your bodies a living sacrifice …

DETAIL #4. THE DEVIL’S BARGAIN FOR SOULS.
Mark 8:36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his
own soul?
Mark 8:37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

1) Nobody ever gained the whole world.
2) What part of the world they do gain will not satisfy them.
Ecclesiastes 1:8 … the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
3) What part of the world they do gain, they can not keep.
Jim Elliot’s quote, ” He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain
what he cannot lose. ”

Luke 12:15 “… “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not
consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.

What do people sell their souls for? The passing pleasures of sin!!!
Hebrews 11:24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the
son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
Hebrews 11:25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to
enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,

2 Corinthians 4:4 (GW) The god of this world has blinded the minds of those who
don’t believe …”.

Charles F. Kettering said,”We should all be concerned about future because we will
have to spend the rest of our lives there.”

In the Journal of Psychology is a survey of 160,000 was conducted asking people
what their most important personal values were:
56% Economic security
46% Home & Family
25% Liberty & Freedom
13% World Peace
10% Education
8% Religion
4% Decency & Morality
2% Being a good citizen
Question: Do you see the word “soul” anywhere mentioned on the list?

DETAIL #5. JESUS CHRIST IS THE VICTORIOUS SAVIOR-KING.
Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is
written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
Luke 4:13 Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from
Him until an opportune time.

Isaiah 59:16 He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no
intercessor; Therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him; And His own
righteousness, it sustained Him.
Psalm 106:23 (NLT) So he declared he would destroy them. But Moses, his chosen
one, stepped between the Lord and the people. He begged him to turn from his
anger and not destroy them.
Hebrews 7:25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to
God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

Worship gets us into trouble and worship will get us out of trouble.
‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 4:7 [AMP], The end and culmination of all things is near. Therefore, be
sound-minded and self-controlled for the purpose of prayer [staying balanced
and focused on the things of God so that your communication will be clear,
reasonable, specific and pleasing to Him].
Song of Solomon 6:6 (TPT) The shining of your spirit shows how you have taken
My truth to become balanced and complete.

I. BLESSED ARE THE BALANCED IN THEIR PERSONAL LIVES.
Song of Solomon 6:6 (TPT) The shining of your spirit shows how you have taken
My truth to become balanced and complete.

1. Our Physical Health is all about Proper Balance.

2. Our Nutritional Health is all about Proper Balance.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy
Spirit…Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Philippians 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men.

3. Our Monetary Health is all about Proper Balance.
Ecclesiastes 5:10 (NIV) Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves
wealth is never satisfied with their income.
Deuteronomy 8:18 “But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you
the ability to produce wealth…”
1 Corinthians 5:7 “… What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything
you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift?

4. Our Mental Health is all about Proper Balance.
2 Timothy 1:7 AMPC: “I refuse give in to my fears. For God did not give me a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind!”

II. BLESSED ARE THE BALANCED IN THEIR SPIRITUAL LIVES.
John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Grace says, “You’re forgiven.”
Truth says, “You’re guilty.”
Grace says, “I love you no matter what.”
Truth says, “You’re accountable”
Grace says, “You’re fine.”
Truth says, “You’re broken.”
Grace says, “It’s going to be okay.”
Truth says, “You’re going to have to work on it.”

John 1:16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

Romans 5:2 “…this grace in which we now stand …”
Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence
2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses,…”

Hebrews 10:28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy

James 2:10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point,
he is guilty of all.

John 1:17 “… but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

III. BLESSED ARE THE BALANCED IN THEIR CONGREGATIONAL LIVES.
1 Peter 4:7 [AMP], The end and culmination of all things is near. Therefore, be
sound-minded and self-controlled for the purpose of prayer [staying balanced
and focused on the things of God so that your communication will be clear,
reasonable, specific and pleasing to Him].

John 4:17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her,
You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’
John 4:18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not
your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

John 4:19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
John 4:25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ).
When He comes, He will tell us all things.
John 4:26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

John 8:3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery.
And when they had set her in the midst,
John 8:4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act.
John 8:5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned.
But what do You say?”
John 8:7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them,
He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.
John 8:9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out
one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone,
and the woman standing in the midst.
John 8:10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said
to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
John 8:11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you;
go and sin no more.”

Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

1. The Casualty in Conservative Churches is Grace.
1 Corinthians 5:12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside?
Do you not judge those who are inside?
1 Corinthians 5:13 But those who are outside God judges.

John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that
the world through him might be saved.

2. The Casualty in Liberal Churches is Truth.
Jude 1:4 (NLT) I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into
your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives.
The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our
only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things,
which is the head, even Christ:

Titus 2:11 (NIV) “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.”

Sermon Notes

Isaiah 46:9 (NIV) “… I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none
like me.
Isaiah 46:10 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times what
is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’
Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things
which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all
the words of this law.
Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and
more unto the perfect day.
2 Peter 1:19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to
heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star
rises in your hearts;

Rule #5: All of the Bible is about Jesus.
Rule # 6: The Bible not only has to be Read, It has to be Interpreted
Rule #7: “A Text Taken out of Context is a Con”
Rule #8: Let the Bible interpret Bible
Rule #9: There is a Progressive Revelation in the Bible

Progressive revelation simply put is the unfolding of God’s revelation.

Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His
servants—things which must shortly take place.

Now the whole Bible is Jesus being revealed and He is the one doing the revealing
The whole Bible is God’s Revelation not just the Book of Revelation

Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things
which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all
the words of this law.

I. GOD’S PROGRESSIVE REVELATION COMES THROUGH INFORMATION.
Isaiah 46:9 “… For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none
like Me,
Isaiah 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things
that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,’
Isaiah 46:9 (NIV) “… I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none
like me.
Isaiah 46:10 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times what
is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’

(1) Later revelation interprets earlier revelation.
(2) The New Testament interprets the Old Testament,
It has been said: “The New Testament is in the Old Testament concealed;
the Old Testament is in the New Testament revealed.”

Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son,
made of a woman, made under the law,

Isaiah 30:18 Therefore the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you …
Blessed are all those who wait for Him.

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…

Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son;
this day have I begotten thee.

Psalm 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit
from me.

The Father is God
Romans 1:7 …Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Son is God
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God.

The Holy Spirit is God
Acts 5:3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the
Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?
Acts 5:4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it
not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You
have not lied to men but to God.”

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word,
and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

II. GOD’S PROGRESSIVE REVELATION COMES THROUGH ILLUSTRATION.
Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and
more unto the perfect day.

The truth does get truer.

Psalm 119:133 Order my steps in your word: and let not any iniquity have
dominion over me.
Psalm 17:5 Hold up my goings in your paths, that my footsteps slip not.

The light recieved increases light
The light refused increases darkness.
Vance Havner once said, “A man is judged not on the basis of how much sin he
commits, but on the basis of how much light he rejects. ”

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world,
and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light,
lest his deeds should be exposed

III. GOD’S PROGRESSIVE REVELATION COMES THROUGH ILLUMINATION.
2 Peter 1:19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to
heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star
rises in your hearts;
2 Peter 1:19 (NLT) You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words
are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning
Star shines in your hearts.
1 Peter 1:19 (KJV) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do
well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day
dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked;
Who can know it?

1 Peter 1:19 “… until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;

Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

1 Peter 1:19 “… until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things
in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and
morning star.

We sing a hymn about it “The Lily of the Valley”
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star.

Heavenly sunlight, heavenly sunlight,
flooding my soul with glory divine:
hallelujah, I am rejoicing,
singing His praises, Jesus is mine.

Luke 21:26 Men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those
things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Luke 21:27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and
great glory.

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom
of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
Matthew 7:22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied
in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’
Matthew 7:23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me,
you who practice lawlessness!’

Sermon Notes:

Colossians 2:18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility
and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly
puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Colossians 2:19 And not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished
and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.
Colossians 2:20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the
world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations–
Colossians 2:21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,”
Colossians 2:22 Which all concern things which perish with the using–according
to the commandments and doctrines of men?
Colossians 2:23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed
religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the
indulgence of the flesh.

Colossians 2:18 Let no one cheat you of your reward,…”

I. MORE EXTREME EXAMPLES.
1) EXTREME SELF-HUMILIATION.
Colossians 2:18 “… taking delight in false humility …
Colossians 2:23 “… false humility …”
Colossians 2:23 (Amp) “… they delight in self-humiliation …”

2) EXTREME SELF-FABRICATIONS.
Colossians 2:18 “… and worship of angels, intruding into those things which
he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Colossians 2:18 “… and worship of angels …”

2 Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming
themselves into apostles of Christ.
2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an
angel of light.

Revelation 22:8 Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and
saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these
things.
Revelation 22:9 Then he said to me, “See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow
servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of
this book. Worship God.

Matthew 12:39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous
generation seeks after a sign …”

3) EXTREME SELF-REGULATIONS.
Colossians 2:20 “… Do you subject yourselves to regulations–
Colossians 2:21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,”
Colossians 2:23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in
self-imposed religion …”

Here are some of the rules and regulations that must be followed by those
families who are part of the Institute in Basic Life Principles:
Women are expected to wear ankle-length dresses and to never cut their hair;
The presence of text printed onto dresses is not allowed, as it is thought to bring
attention to the body.
Wearing makeup, perfume, nail polish and high heels, is seen as lustful.
Women are also discouraged from attaining a higher education.
Men are expected to wear dark suits and white shirts, and blue jeans are seen
as ungodly.
Males are clean-shaven and short-haired.
Men are also expected to be circumcised, as being uncircumcised is seen as
being unpure.
The consumption of media, such as television, movies, most music and the
internet, is not allowed, though non-contemporary Christian music is accepted.
Dancing is not allowed, and the consumption of alcohol is also banned.
They practice chaperoned courtship, in which a couple becomes acquainted
only in a group setting

John 17:15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You
should keep them from the evil one.

4) EXTREME SELF-INFLICTION.
Colossians 2:23 “… and neglect of the body,
Colossians 2:23 (NASB) “… severe treatment of the body …”
Colossians 2:23 (NIV) “… their harsh treatment of the body …”

5) EXTREME SELF-MUTIALATION.
Matthew 19:12 For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s
womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are
eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake.
He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”

II. OBVIOUS ANSWERS TO EXTREME EXAMPLES.
1) DON’T LOSE CONNECTIONS WITH THE HEAD.
Colossians 2:19 And not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body,
nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase
that is from God.

2) DON’T LIVE FOR THE WRONG WORLD.
Colossians 2:20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the
world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations–

3) DON’T SEEK THE WRONG HELP.
Colossians 2:23 (NLT) These rules may seem wise because they require strong
devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no
help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

Christianity is not a religion of rules and regulatons but of a living relationship
with Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
praying always for you,
Colossians 1:4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for
all the saints;
Colossians 1:5 Because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which
you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel,
Colossians 1:6 Which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is
bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew
the grace of God in truth;
Colossians 1:7 As you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant,
who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf,
Colossians 1:8 Who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.

I. PRAYING LIKE PAUL.
Colossians 1:3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
praying always for you,

It’s been said, “The best way to really get to know somebody is to hear
them pray.”

II. THANKING GOD FOR YOUR FAITH.
Colossians 1:4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for
all the saints;

III. LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR HEAVENLY HOPE.
Colossians 1:5 Because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, …”

Colossians 1:5 “… of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel,”

Revelation 14:6 Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having
the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth–to every nation,
tribe, tongue, and people —

Colossians 1:6 Which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is
bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew
the grace of God in truth;

Acts 12:24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

IV. SINGING THE PRAISES OF THE UNSUNG.
Colossians 1:7 As you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant,
who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf,
Colossians 1:8 Who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.

The greatest ministry comes from the deepest pain.

2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
2 Corinthians 1:4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to
comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves
are comforted by God.

2 Corinthians 1:4 (NLT) He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort
others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort
God has given us.

Acts 9:5 And he [Paul] said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am
Jesus, whom you are persecuting.”

Galatians 1:13 “… I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried
to destroy it.
1 Corinthians 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be
called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
Philippians 3:6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church;

Philemon 1:23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you,

Colossians 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a bondservant of Christ, greets you,
always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that you may stand perfect and
complete in all the will of God.
