Jesus On Trial

Jesus On Trial

Morning Sermon - 4-9-17

by Pastor Ed Hamilton | Jesus On Trial

Sermon Notes:

I. THE PASSOVER PARDON
Mark 15:6 Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them,
whomever they requested.

John 2:24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men,
John 2:25 And had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what
was in man.

II. THE PUNISHABLE PRISONER
Mark 15:7 And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained …

Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To
preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at
liberty those who are oppressed;

Mark 15:7 … Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels …

Mark 15:7 … they had committed murder in the rebellion.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death … ”

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and
death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned–

III. THE PEOPLE’S PREFERENCE
Mark 15:8 Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he
had always done for them.
Mark 15:9 But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you
the King of the Jews?”
Mark 15:10 For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

Mark 15:11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather
release Barabbas to them.

Treat the guilty as innocent, and treat the innocent as guilty.
Let the guilty live, kill the sinless one.

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world,
and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Acts 3:14 But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to
be granted to you,
Acts 3:15 And killed the Prince of life …

The crowd called for the release of Barabbas which meant they were calling for
the death of Jesus.

Mark 15:12 Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me
to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”
Mark 15:13 So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”
Mark 15:14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they
cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”

They not only want Him dead but not until He has been tortured.

IV. THE PERSONAL PASSOVER
Mark 15:15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them;
and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.

Mark 15:15 So Pilate … released Barabbas to them;

Jesus did not die on Calvary on His own cross but on a cross that was made
for Barabbas.

Isaiah 53:6 … the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

“I was guilty with nothing to say; they were coming to take me away,
When a voice from heaven was heard that said, ‘Let him go take me instead.’
I should have been crucified, I should have suffered and died.
I should have hung on the cross in disgrace, but Jesus God’s Son to my place.”

Mark 15:12 Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me
to do with Him?”

Man He has appointed, and He proved to everyone who this is by raising Him
from the dead.”

does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Psalm 139:1 O Lord, You have searched me and known me.

thought afar off.

1. Judge Jesus will get to the truth.

Proverbs 23:23 Buy the truth, and do not sell it …

When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and
the father of it.

Acts 24:5 For we have found this man a plague, a creator of dissension among
all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

Acts 25:11 For if I am an offender, or have committed anything deserving of death,
I do not object to dying; but if there is nothing in these things of which these men
accuse me, no one can deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar.”

2. Judge Jesus will make wrongs things right.

1 Peter 3:14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed.
And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.

Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.
But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Acts 17:30 (NLT) “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in
earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins
and turn to him.
Acts 17:31 (NLT) For He has set a day for judging the world with justice by the
Man He has appointed, and He proved to everyone who this is by raising Him
